Massage is a great way to relieve stress!
People from all walks of life, all ages, active or inactive, can all benefit from a massage, either relaxing, or deep. Many different techniques are used in massage, these include: –
Effleurage
A light friction technique commonly used to begin a massage treatment. Effleurage is made up of long, stroking movements which are performed using a flat hand or fingers. Effleurage is used to increase the flow of the lymphatic system.
Petrissage
This type of massage stroke is often described as one in which the therapist is kneading, rolling, wringing, and lifting the soft or connective tissue being worked on.
Hacking
A light and fast movement performed with the side of hands. Both hands are used to strike muscle areas alternately. A hacking massage technique is primarily used to stimulate both the nervous and the circulatory system.
Please remember that you can control the strength of massage. Some people enjoy a really deep massage, whilst others prefer a lighter touch, always let your therapist know.
How does Massage Help?
All sorts of research evidence suggests that benefits are both physical and mental. The way we feel mentally can have a physical effect on our body, as we feel the stresses in our daily lives reflected in tight muscles, and restricted movement. Massage helps the body to relax, which in turn reduces the effects of stress.
You may have heard about Trigger points as these are some of the areas our osteopaths will work on. This is simply treating points in the muscle to relieve tension. Trigger pointing increases temperature and blood flow through the muscles promoting relaxation. When muscles are relaxed they can be restored to full length. Trigger pointing helps restore movement and increase flexibility in the muscles, restoring them to their normal ‘relaxed’ state
Helpful hints if you aren't used to Massage
A lot of people are nervous about the appropriate clothing for a massage. Really it is up to the individual and whether the massage is a full body, or back, neck & shoulder. Your therapist will leave the room as you undress, and we have towels or sarongs available for your use. If your problem areas are in your lower back, hip, buttocks or groin, then full underwear IS necessary.Your therapist
- If you want to talk to the therapist during the massage, please do, but it is a chance for you to be quiet, so don’t feel you have to.
- If you find that the massage is too painful, don’t be afraid to say so. A massage that is too strong and painful can actually make the muscles more tense.
